Methodology
How SwipeScore works
SwipeScore is the trade value we give every player. The top players in each format are worth a little over 10,000, and everyone else is on the same scale, so you can add up the players on each side of a trade and compare the totals.
Where the values come from
We combine three public sources. FantasyCalc builds its values from trades that managers have made. KeepTradeCut builds its values from fans voting on which players they would keep, trade or cut. FantasyPros publishes an expert consensus ranking, rest of season for redraft and long term for dynasty.
KeepTradeCut and FantasyPros use their own scales, so we take their order of players and convert it to FantasyCalc's value curve. The blend is 40% FantasyCalc, 35% KeepTradeCut and 25% FantasyPros. Redraft superflex leaves FantasyPros out, because it has no rest-of-season superflex ranking, and uses 55% FantasyCalc and 45% KeepTradeCut. A player valued by only one source gets 80% of that value.
Formats and updates
There are twelve boards: redraft and dynasty, one QB and superflex, each in PPR, half PPR and standard scoring. Each board is rebuilt about every three hours.
Weekly projections are not part of the value. When we tested them against trade market data, they made season-long values less accurate. We use them only for injury status.
See all twelve boardsInjuries and bye weeks
Bye weeks never count as missed games. A player who misses one game also keeps his full value. From the second game on, each game he is expected to miss lowers his value in proportion to the games left in the regular season, by at most half. Injured reserve and repeated absences lower it the most. In dynasty the reduction is a quarter as large.
Value over replacement (VOR)
VOR is a player's SwipeScore minus the value of the player who could replace him in your lineup for free. Two players with the same SwipeScore can have very different VOR when one plays a position that is deep on waivers.
On the public boards, the replacement is the first player past the starters in a standard 12-team league: QB13 (QB24 in superflex), RB30, WR31 and TE14. In an imported league, it is the average of the three best free agents at the position, counting only players on an NFL roster.
Adjustments for your league
The public boards assume a standard 12-team league. When you import a league, SwipeScore is adjusted for its settings.
- Positions your league starts more of are worth more. FLEX and superflex spots count by how often each position fills them. No position goes up more than 25% or down more than 15%.
- Top players are worth more in smaller leagues and less in larger ones.
- Tight ends gain value in leagues with a TE premium.
- Keeper leagues blend the redraft and dynasty boards, weighted by how many players each team keeps.
- Guillotine leagues raise top players further, since each eliminated roster goes to waivers.
- Likes and passes in your league move a player's value toward what your league mates will trade for.
Team SwipeScore
A team's SwipeScore is the total VOR of its players, with no player counted below zero. A player you could replace with a free agent adds nothing to the total. It is shown in two parts: the best starting lineup the model can set from the roster, and the bench.
Projected finish
The league power rankings show each team's record, its last five results and a projected finish. To project the finish, we start from each team's wins and add its expected wins for the rest of the regular season, treating every remaining game as one against an average team in the league. The chance of winning each game comes from a rating that weights lineup strength at 60% and points per game at 40%. A team one standard deviation above average wins about 69% of the time. Ties count as half a win.
The projection does not use the league schedule yet, so strength of schedule is not included.
Known limits
SwipeScore changes only as quickly as its sources do. A rookie valued only by KeepTradeCut keeps the one-source reduction until another source values him. Trade grades in the app use more than SwipeScore. They also consider how a trade changes each team's starting lineup and what each manager has shown through their swipes.
Use it in your league
Import a Sleeper, ESPN or Yahoo league and every trade card shows SwipeScore adjusted for both rosters. If the other manager likes the same trade, you get a match.
